Homemade Cosmetics for Beginners: Safety, Kits and First Recipes

To learn how to make your own skincare, start with recipes that contain no water: an oil blend, a whipped butter, or a clay mask mixed fresh and used at once. You need a clean bowl, a small whisk, a jar and a 48-hour patch test on your inner forearm. Anything with water - creams, lotions, mists - needs a preservative and a fridge, so leave those for later. This guide uses the WAAM range DodoBeauty stocks in Mauritius as official local distributor, but the method suits any raw ingredient.

What can I safely make at home, and what should I leave to the lab?

Safe beginner projects share one rule: no water in the finished product. Oil blends, whipped butters, balms, dry scrubs and single-use clay masks are all fine. Creams, lotions, cleansers and shampoos are a different craft: water lets bacteria and mould grow, so they need a measured preservative, a pH check and proper emulsifying - a laboratory's job. Two things are better bought: WAAM's flaxseed gel comes ready-made "so you skip boiling your own", and its aloe vera gel is a base used as it comes. Buy those from the bases collection; make the oils, butters and masks.

What do I need to start?

Tools: a glass or ceramic bowl, a small whisk, a bamboo spoon, clean jars, a dark glass bottle and masking tape for labels. Ingredients: WAAM Cosmetics is a French brand founded in 2016, built on pure, natural ingredients "you can use on their own or blend into your own recipes". Four kits are available at DodoBeauty; the table quotes each description, with live prices.

How do I keep homemade cosmetics safe and fresh?

Hygiene does most of the work. The US Food and Drug Administration lists the main contamination routes as contaminated water or ingredients, an ineffective preservation system, poor packaging, warm or damp storage (which also breaks preservatives down) and fingers dipped into the jar, and tells consumers never to add water or saliva to a product (FDA, Microbiological Safety and Cosmetics). At home:

  • Wash your hands, then wash and dry every bowl, whisk and jar.
  • Keep water out of water-free recipes: dry hands, dry spoon, cap straight back on.
  • Store oils and butters in a cool, dark cupboard; in a Mauritian summer at 27-34 °C, whipped butters soften and coconut oil turns liquid, and the fridge is fine.
  • Anything containing water - a floral-water mask, an aloe blend - is single-use.
  • Label every jar with contents and date; use blends and butters within three months, sooner if the smell changes.

What are three first recipes I can make this weekend?

All three are water-free or single-use and contain no essential oils. Patch-test each finished recipe on your inner forearm for 48 hours; for daily use on the face, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a test spot twice a day for seven to ten days (AAD, How to test skin care products). With a tree-nut allergy, ask your doctor before using shea, argan or coconut; for children, pregnancy or a skin condition, check with a professional first.

1. Nourishing hair and body oil (makes 45 ml)

Pour 30 ml of jojoba oil and 15 ml of argan oil into a clean dark bottle, add ten drops of a macerate such as WAAM's rosemary oil (a plant infused in oil, not an essential oil), cap and roll. Jojoba is "the closest match to skin's own sebum", so the blend suits oily skin as well as dry; argan is "a light finishing oil for lengths". Three drops on damp ends, or a teaspoon on the body after showering. For a full pre-wash treatment, read our hair-oiling guide.

2. Whipped shea butter (makes about 65 ml)

Stand the jar of deodorised shea butter in warm water until soft, spoon 50 g into your bowl and mash it. Add 15 ml of coconut oil - "solid below about 25°C", so already liquid on most Mauritian days - and whisk for three to five minutes until pale and fluffy, then jar it. The butter has "the natural nutty smell removed", so it is unscented and suits elbows, heels and dry shins. If it slumps in the heat, it still works.

3. Purifying clay mask (single use)

In a ceramic bowl, mix one tablespoon (about 10 g) of green montmorillonite clay with roughly a tablespoon of rose floral water, added gradually, into a smooth paste. Green clay is "the most absorbent of the clays"; for dry or sensitive skin use white kaolin clay, "the mildest of the clays". Apply thinly, leave five to ten minutes without letting it dry hard, rinse with lukewarm water and finish with two drops of the oil blend. It contains water, so make it fresh every time.

How do I read a WAAM label?

Vegan: true across the whole WAAM range. Organic: only a handful of WAAM products are certified organic, so look for the logo on the specific product. "Made in France": true for finished products, kits, bases such as the aloe and flaxseed gels, and the Magic Powders - not for raw oils, clays, butters or floral waters, which come from wherever the plant grows (the argan oil is Moroccan). COSMOS: Ecocert's standard has two levels. COSMOS ORGANIC requires at least 95% of plant ingredients to be organic and at least 20% organic in the total formula (10% for rinse-off products); COSMOS NATURAL only requires natural-origin ingredients. Water and minerals never count as organic, so a water-free oil can reach 100% organic while a cream cannot (Ecocert, COSMOS certification). Natural is not organic.

Can I go zero-waste with powders?

Yes, and it is the easiest zero-waste bathroom switch: there is nothing to make. WAAM's Magic Powder range is made in France and ships without water. The Magic Powder toothpaste (60 g, Rs 425) is a powder: "dip a damp brush and clean as usual, with no tube". The shower powder (70 g, Rs 650) becomes a gel when you "activate it with water in your hand", and the powder shampoo (70 g, Rs 700) works the same way. Keep the pots dry, away from the shower spray.

Is a DIY kit a good gift for Divali or Christmas?

A kit beats loose ingredients as a gift: the recipes and tools remove the "now what?" moment. Mes Premières Tambouilles suits a complete beginner, the Trousse DIY Start Box a tighter budget, and the hair box someone who already oils their hair. Divali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 and Christmas on 25 December; DodoBeauty delivers every day, same-day if you order before 11:30 am. Frequently asked questions

How long do homemade cosmetics keep?

Water-free oil blends and whipped butters keep about three months in a cool, dark place; discard them when the smell turns. Anything mixed with water, floral water or aloe gel has no preservative: use it the same day. Bought gels and floral waters follow the pack's period-after-opening symbol.

Which kit should a complete beginner buy?

Mes Premières Tambouilles (Rs 2,525.40) is described as the ingredients and recipes to make your own cosmetics from scratch with nothing else to buy - what a first-timer needs. On a smaller budget, the Trousse DIY Start Box (Rs 935) plus one clay and one oil covers the three recipes here.

Is WAAM organic?

Not as a range. Every WAAM product is vegan, but only a handful are certified organic, so check the specific product for the logo. Ecocert's COSMOS standard separates COSMOS NATURAL (natural-origin ingredients) from COSMOS ORGANIC (at least 95% of plant ingredients organic, 20% organic overall). Natural is not organic.

Do I need a preservative?

Only if the recipe contains water in any form: floral water, aloe gel, tea, fresh fruit. Pure oils, butters and dry powders do not support microbial growth in the same way, so a clean, dry jar and a three-month use-by are enough. Beginners: make water-free products and mix water-based masks fresh.

Can I make my own shampoo?

Not as a first project. A liquid shampoo is a water-based product that needs a gentle surfactant, a preservative and a pH check. Easier: an oil blend before shampooing, or the WAAM Magic Powder shampoo, a made-in-France powder you activate with water in your hand - zero-waste without the chemistry.

Is it cheaper than buying finished products?

Up front, no: jojoba and argan together cost Rs 1,920, and a first kit is Rs 935 to Rs 2,525.40. Per use it can be: 75 ml bottles make several batches. The real saving is fewer abandoned half-bottles and knowing what is on your skin. Unsure? Start with one clay at Rs 475.
