A vessel of the French East India Company launched in Lorient (France) in 1737. Eight years later, while carrying food supplies to Mauritius who was then suffering from a terrible drought, she was shipwrecked off the coast of Mauritius while under the command of Captain Richard de Lamarre. Only 9 men out of a crew of 149 survived. The French love story of ''Paul et Virginie'', made legend by the writer Jacques-Henri Bernardin de St.-Pierre, ended on the St. Geran when Virginia drowned on her return from France to meet Paul.
The Saint Géran remains are a diving site and her bell can be seen in the Mahébourg Naval Museum of Mauritius.
